Garages are givers: why you should love yours

New ways to look at your garage

If your relationship with your garage is like most, it’s probably a little one-sided. When is the last time you even worried about your garage, let alone did something nice for it? You don’t have to get too fancy, but your garage does so much for you that it should definitely be more than an afterthought.

How many times have you parked in your garage and avoided having to deal with snow or pollen on your nice, clean car? Have you ever tripped over the garden equipment and cursed at the clutter? Be thankful that you have a place to put all your things and start changing the way you think about your garage.

Some people have already mastered the garage improvement game. There are garages out there with custom storage systems and unique designs that are the envy of every garage owner. You don’t have to go that far, but you should give something back. After all, your garage gives you:

1. More (or less) value and equity in the home

If your garage is well-maintained and in good repair, it can add a lot to your property value. If, however, the garage is a forgotten space where things go to die, it’s not going to impress any appraiser or potential buyer. This is probably the largest single space in the home, and it deserves to be treated as such.

How does your garage affect your home’s value?

  • Function: It has to be a functional, usable space to be an asset.
  • Curb appeal: Front-facing garage doors can take up 30-45% of the street view, so a new door can add a lot of value.
  • Technology: Newer garage door systems that offer smartphone connectivity are becoming much more popular on the market.
  • Updates: Renovating the space can be inexpensive and offer a big increase in value.

2. A great space for hobbies or entertaining

Your safety

Rather than using it as a place to store your things, you could turn your garage into a number of other functional spaces. Imagine turning your garage into the perfect man cave with a huge flat-screen TV and a garage door that opens onto a grilling patio. Perhaps you are looking for a new yoga studio. Your garage could be the perfect space. Regardless how big it is, there is definitely room for improvement here. If you don’t already use your garage for something, it’s time to start. Otherwise, you’re letting a great space go to waste.

3. An entry point into the home

With an attached garage, you don’t have to worry about running through the weather to get to the house. In fact, as many as 70% of those surveyed reported that they use the garage as the primary way to enter and exit their home. If you’re tired of walking around piles of clutter or trying to fit your car into the small space that isn’t filled with junk, it might be time to spruce things up.

While you’re at it, consider investing in some small improvements, such as new storage systems or a new garage door system. Reward yourself with a new garage door for taking care of the space, and you’ll want to keep it looking great after you put in all that work. Not only will you feel better about your garage, but it will be less of a safety risk for everyone.

4. A place to keep all that stuff that doesn’t have another home

There are usually two types of homeowners: those who take items to the garage and put them in the appropriate area for storage and those who take things to the garage because they have nowhere else to go. Your garage gives you a great storage space for garden equipment, sports stuff, tools, vehicles, and so much more. You really should give back a little by showing the space some love.

Your car is one of the most expensive purchases that you will make. It’s natural that you would want to protect it. The same goes for any vehicle, of course, so having a functional garage is a must if you are going to protect your investments. Keeping your garage in good shape requires regular care and maintenance.

If your garage is detached and you have empty space up above, consider putting in some overhead storage. That way, you can maximize and organize the space at the same time.

5. A breeding ground for safety and health hazards

This definitely isn’t a perk like the rest of the things your garage gives you, but it is something that a lot of people don’t think about. Clutter is dangerous for everyone, not to mention the fact that it can be stressful even to look at or think about. Plus, if you have a garage that’s packed with boxes and other items, you’re not going to be able to see any potential damage. It could even become a fire risk if the clutter gets too out of hand.

Your new happy place

Don’t keep food in the garage. Cans might be okay but keep the rest of the food in the house. All kinds of critters can find ways into your garage, no matter how secure you think it might be. If they smell food, they’ll try that much harder.

If potential vermin and accidents aren’t enough, consider that a cluttered, damp garage is a haven for mildew, odors, and mold. Do you want to ruin your belongings and your garage? If you ignore it, that just might happen.

Most importantly, garages increase the value of your home

Stop putting off the inevitable. Stop using your garage as the place where things go to collect dust. Picture your garage as a functional, beautiful space that is organized and useful to everyone in the home. Wouldn’t it be nice?
