Adding an Overhead Door to Create a Storage Area

Garage in the basement

Did you know that overhead doors can be customized to fit just about any opening? With a minimum size of 4 feet wide by 6 feet high, or a maximum size of 20 feet wide, you can design a door that will turn just about any space into a storage or garage area.

With land at a premium, many homes just don’t offer enough storage space. If you are in this situation, consider adding an overhead door to create a storage area in your home. One property owner, for example, had an area with a patio door leading out from a walk-out basement. He had that door removed and in its place, added an overhead door. It was smaller than a standard garage door, measuring just 6’6” high and 6’10” wide. In order to meet building codes, the walls and ceiling of the new storage area had to be insulated. Although he can’t use the space for his car, it is quite practical for his mower, snowmobile and motorcycle.

Adding a new overhead door to your home can be done in such a way as to add both charm and utility. We recommend choosing a door style that complements your home’s architecture. You can then customize the color to blend in nicely with your home’s existing color palette. Finally, adding some decorative hardware and windows can complete the look. Windows can be made of clear, tinted or satin glass, depending on the level of privacy you prefer. All window panes are made of tempered glass to ensure safety.
