2014 Garage Trends: Five We Want to See More of in 2015

Take a look at a garage door. You will see that a system moves the sectional door up and down. That system is largely the same as it was in 1970, with the exception of a push toward efficiency with materials.

There are certain things homeowners want in garage doors: low maintenance, good insulation, and a complementary design that works well with the style of their home. They want to know they can save money in energy costs while maintaining a nice look for their garage door.

So, let’s talk about some garage door trends that started in 2014 and that we would love to see more of in 2015.

Automation

  • People can use smart phones, tablets, and computers to operate their garage doors thanks to iOS and Android apps.
  • Manufacturers offer apps that do different things, like controlling alarm systems, lighting, and sound systems as well as the garage door itself.
  • We hope to see a day when the apps are consolidated so that everything will be accessed in one place with just a swipe of the finger.

Color Choices

  • People want something unique, and these days, consumers want to know they can get something that reflects their own personality, not their neighbors’. Already, there are garage door manufacturers that offer a variety of different factory-painted doors, and we expect in the coming year to see more manufacturers join this trend. It is a way to make things simpler for the consumer too.
  • There is already one manufacturer who can use an inkjet process and create an image right on the garage door. This allows people even more creative freedom and they could even get their favorite sports team logo printed on the door. That’s just one of many ways this technology could be used.
  • We hope to see new innovations in paint, though, including graffiti-resistant paint, which would be ideal for garage doors in urban areas.

Finishes

  • Many homeowners, especially those of the male persuasion, consider the garage their sanctuary or “man cave”, so to speak. These people invest a great deal ofmoney in the garage, including installation of storage systems, adding in floor coverings, etc. They want something that looks amazing for their garage doors. These eye-catching options include unique finishes, painted hinges, hardware, and more.

Energy Efficiency

  • The garage is no longer just a garage. It is an extension of the living space for many people, and that means it needs to be energy efficient. Many homeowners are converting the space into fitness centers, man caves, and even a play room for the kids. They need to know the space will be comfortable.
  • Garage doors have better thermal resistance now more than ever through polyurethane foam insulation. In addition, thermal breaks are used to make the garage doors even more air tight. This prevents cold, heat, and humidity from getting into the space.

Windows

  • Modern homes enjoy natural light, and today’s contemporary styles in homes require a different style for the garage door as well. More windows on these doors are designed to match the style of the home too.
  • Thanks to a market that is quickly becoming more globalized, the United States is seeing more European garage door designs. In the coming year, you will see porthole windows and garage doors that match the front door of the home specifically.

More and more, we are seeing the garage door becoming a main entrance to the home. Because of this, greater numbers of manufacturers are using various components for the garage door to ensure the homeowners have a much easier life.
