Sensible Tips for Storing Clothes in a Garage

Woman With Boxes

You might think that storing clothes that you won’t use for a while in the garage is a good idea. However, you have to do more than just store winter jackets, summer shorts or other seasonal items inside boxes and place them inside your garage. You have to do the following things to keep your clothes stored in the best way possible to keep them all protected.

Wash Everything First

You must wash every single piece of clothing that you plan on storing even if it doesn’t look like it needs to be washed. It is easy for insects to get into soils around your clothing. Some soils from nature may also encourage the development of mold and bacteria. A detergent that can target different soils that you know are on your fabrics should be used.

Don’t Use the Floor

As convenient as it can be to leave a box of clothes on the floor, you must avoid doing this. Your clothes could be vulnerable to water damage from either a leaking garage or from a leak in your water heater. They could also be harmed by items from high up in the garage that may fall onto the box.

You can use shelves around a garage to store your clothing boxes. A storage cabinet with doors can also be used if needed. A cabinet can store not only your clothes but also sports equipment and other items you might want to secure for a while. A cabinet will also prevent items from developing dust. Make sure everything you store next to your clothes is properly washed so no soils will threaten your fabrics.

Avoid Using Mothballs

Mothballs are often used to keep insects from getting near clothing. However, they are pesticides that can be harmful to children and pets that come near them. In addition, it is easy for mothballs to become loose and to deteriorate after a while, thus allowing insects to eventually get into your space after a while.

You can use cedar chips or other cedar-lined items around your clothes to get the same results as what you’d get with mothballs. Lavender chips may also be used if needed. These chips will create a nice scent and will not let off any pesticides or other harmful gases.

Add an Insecticide in the Garage First

Inspect your garage and clean it out with an insecticide before you store anything in the room. Make sure the insecticide is used first and that the area is cleared out before adding any clothes that you want to store in the space. Allow the space to air out for a bit so the fumes from an insecticide will not get in your clothes.

Avoid Storage Fragile Clothing in Your Garage

You cannot afford to just store any piece of clothing in your garage. You have to avoid placing delicate pieces of clothing like dresses in the garage as they are more likely to develop moisture. Keep such fabrics inside your home where you can easily adjust the climate. Fabrics for everyday use that aren’t so fragile can be stored in your garage.

Bonus: Use a Strong Garage Door

It is especially crucial for you to store your clothing in a garage with a door that is well-insulated. This is to keep the climate within your garage comfortable while also securing the space.
