Reclaim Your Garage Space Using These Simple Tips

Garage Plan

How often have you stood in front of your garage door and lamented at what a disaster it was inside? You certainly aren’t alone in this. Many people have messy garages filled with items they no longer use and that are just taking up space. They have a cluttered and disorganized mess that is not doing them any favors in terms of smart space usage.

You need more room in the garage. Maybe you need to bring in the cars for the winter, or maybe you want to have some space to start a workshop in the garage. Regardless of the reason, there are some simple things you can do in order to get better control over your space so you can make the garage a more efficient place.

Clean It

Naturally, the first and most important thing you need to do is to make sure you clean the garage thoroughly. You have to separate the items in the garage into different piles. One pile will be for items that you need to throw away or scrap and that do not have any use for you. The second pile will be for items that you plan to recycle. A third pile can be used for items that you would like to donate or give away. If you would like the chance to make a bit of money, you could set up a fourth pile for those items that you want to sell at a garage sale. Finally, you will have a pile of the items that you actually want to keep and that you know you will be using.

When it comes to getting rid of items that you have stored in your garage, it can be difficult for many people. However, you have to stop and ask yourself whether you are really going to use some of those items and if you actually need them. Most of the time, the answer is no. By cleaning out the garage, you can get the space you need.

New Interior Finish and Insulation

Once you have emptied out your garage of all of those items that you no longer need, you can start thinking about what you are going to do with it. One of the first things you need to consider is whether you will be insulating the garage and adding an interior finish. If you plan to turn the space into a playroom for the kids, or you are thinking about turning it into a game room, a den, or any other place where you will be spending a significant amount of time, then it might be a good idea.

In some cases, you can take care of the insulation on your own. If you aren’t particularly handy though, or if you do not have enough time, then you will want to hire the professionals to take care of it for you. The amount it will cost for the insulation and the new interior finish can vary quite a bit based on the size, the materials used, and whether you do it yourself or hire someone to do it.

Have a Plan in Place

You should have a good plan in place for the interior. One of the first things you need to do is measure the interior once you have the insulation and new walls up, if you chose to go that route. These measurements will make it easier for you when you are trying to determine the layout of the space. For example, if you plan to add furnishings for a new game room or lounge, the measurements will let you know the size of the furniture you are able to get. You could write it all down on a piece of paper and sketch it out, or you could use design software to help you with the process.

What Do You Really Need?

When you first start to design your new garage space, it can be very easy to get overexcited and to try to throw everything into the area – including the kitchen sink. You need to temper that excitement and think about the items that the space really needs. Consider what you will be using it for and then stick to that list of items. There may be some things that you would like, but you can’t currently afford after making all of those other chances. That’s fine, just save for them and add them when you can. This will help you to set your budget.

Remember the Garage Door and Opener

If you are going to change your garage, don’t forget about changing the garage door and door opener. The best option is to have an insulated garage door that also happens to be weatherproof.
